Kerfed Foamkore-Green

The environmentally friendly and bendable version of Foamkore.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green combines the lightweight advantages of Foamkore-Green with the bend ability of Kerfkore to produce a structural lightweight bendable panel. It gives the fabricator the ability to create curves needed by his customer but at a much reduced weight for applications that are normally extremely difficult to achieve.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green consists of a NAF (No Added Formaldehyde) .080 hardboard face material with a polystyrene core that contains no formaldehyde. This environmentally friendly product can help qualify for LEED credits MR 4.1, MR 4.2 and EQ 4.4. Because the wood fiber face materials are FSC certified, the product can provide LEED credit MR 7.0 for chain of custody of sustainable products.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green is constructed by capturing a lightweight polystyrene foam core with higher density face panels and then kerfing one side to provide a strong lightweight bendable panel with excellent structural integrity. The core material is extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) that is closed cell in structure and provides the stable lightweight center. The hardboard face allows the panel to bend while still maintaining a stable surface to apply many different face materials.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green can be fabricated and formed into fixed curved items as with our other kerfed products. Attachment to a ribbed frame by glue and clamps allows the panel to take on the desired shape the project requires. It can also be formed by simply gluing a backing sheet to the rib side of the product while it is bent into the correct shape. Rigid setting glue is recommended on both of these methods.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green stable hardboard face allows for painting or other face material applications with contact adhesive. Weight reduction of over 60% is easily achieved when compared to other similar size products.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green allows for a variety of face materials to be added such as veneer, laminates, vinyl, paper and other thin materials. It provides an excellent product for elevated applications such as signs, curved beams, ceilings, columns, wall panels and other weight concerning areas. The product is designed to be bent or fabricated prior to face attachment. A radius of 8" is obtainable.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green panels are available in a nominal panel size of 4'X8' and 4'X10' in 3/4" thickness.

Kerfed Foamkore-Green projects are much easier and safer by using this lightweight product. It is excellent for applications such as ceiling panels, wall panels, exhibit and display materials, signage and other applications where weight is a concern.

“Prior to using pre-kerfed substrates provided by Interior Products Inc., we painstakingly saw-kerfed plywood panels manually for use in radius millwork applications. Interior Products flexible substrates have cut our skilled labor costs dramatically. The variety of materials supplied by Interior Products (Kerfkore, Timberflex, Flexboard and Ultralite) lends itself to numerous applications and options: panels, doors, curtain walls, mouldings and traditional curved millwork. We can use Interior Products in applications where the weight of plywood panels would be impractical.

Using Kerfkore we can create inlays in flat panels, then bend the panel. Applying inlays to already curved surfaces is tedious, if not impossible. Designers and architects have been delighted with the creative flexibility we can offer them.

During the construction of millwork at Nationwide Arena, Columbus (Ohio) new NHL hockey arena, the designers came to us with a fabrication problem. The original design for a concession area included a steel channel in an elliptical shape suspended from the arena's ceiling. When the structural engineers reviewed the plans, they objected to the fixtures the weight was too great to be properly supported. The design team asked us to find a solution. We used Timberflex to create a curved ceiling fixture painted to mimic the steel channel. Even the steel fabricators were fooled, and the fixture was incredibly light. Interior Products gives us options that we never had before.”
