Econokore

A unique 2-ply product that brings you the ability to form curves with less labor and less cost.

Econokore is a flexible 2-ply product designed for use in numerous kinds of radius projects. It consists of a kerfed MDF core with a High Density Fiberboard or Poplar Plywood overlay face. The recommended bending radius for Econokore is approximately 10-12 inches. While a smaller radius may be obtainable, it is best to do a test before proceeding.

Econokore has many benefits over bending plywood: It saves time by providing a smooth face that requires little or no surface preparation. The High Density Fiberboard or Poplar Plywood face overlay provides for a more symmetrical bending panel with consistency that achieves a superior laminating and painting surface. The 2-ply construction offers a more stable and balanced panel with no warping or twisting as with bending plywood. The product is sanded and calibrated for consistent thickness from sheet to sheet to give you a superior product for splicing resulting in a high quality finished product.

Econokore can be formed and held in position with the use of most adhesives and staples as necessary. The use of horizontal ribs for attachment is preferred as this will provide the best support to allow the material to achieve the smoothest radius possible. Econokore can also be formed by gluing two pieces back to back to form a free standing curved panel such as doors, drawer fronts, and other similar products. PVA adhesive is recommended for this fabrication technique as it will result in a more stable and rigid bond.

Econokore uses standard fabricating techniques that are associated with 3/8" bending plywood and other postlaminated bending materials. It’s a flexible product that can be easily bent and attached to a ribbed frame by the use of nails, staples and glue that requires no special tools.

Econokore should be formed prior to face lamination. Face applications can be achieved with any contact cement recommended for use with decorative laminates. Horizontal or vertical grade laminates are recommended. When using contact adhesive firm hand pressure or moderate pressure with a J-roller works well. As with any product, it is best to do a test on a small sample to determine how the materials will work together.

The use of a PVA glue is also acceptable for attaching face material provided it can be used during or after forming the Econokore. When using a PVA glue, make sure the glue is transferred to both materials and that adequate uniform pressure can be applied for the required amount of time. The use of a vacuum press for this process is preferred.

Econokore is available in nominal 4'x8' and 8'x4' panel sizes.

TESTIMONIALMore
“While we have made curved pieces with bending board and veneers previously this was our first attempt at building something with this kind of shape. I found the kerfkore to be easier to work with than I expected. I don't know if I could have or would have wanted to build this the old way. We did additional supports inside which I understand is overkill with kerfkore. I would feel comfortable doing more shapes with kerfkore in the future.”
